Are British citizens allowed to make a citizens arrest?
US citizen are afforded that right, there are a few boundaries but we are allow to hold them until police arrive

I've made a few , 4 of them for drinking and driving (after they'd crashed and were trying to leave and one for assault.

My approach is to simply tell them they are under citizens arrest for DUI or in the second case assault
and that they are to remain with me until the police arrive,
I tell them if you run you will be caught anyway and you will just further complicate this situation for yourself.
Then I console them and say sorry for the issues that have lead you to make this decision. But you might as well face the music now.

I have never had a problem with any of them running, they just give me this blank kind of look and stay put.

In answer to your question yes civilians may arrest/detain a person who has committed an indictable (crown court) offence.

The law changed recently in favour of the Police enabling them to make an arrest where necessary but it can get complicated if the public start arresting people without the required grounds/knowledge and can result in civil action.

we British can make citizens arrests though a problem may arise when the offender tries to break free insomuch as how much force is necessary to detain him or her and whether that force could be described as necessary especially if injury were to occur which again could mean that you may face a charge of assault.

I made a citizens arrest a couple of years ago when on holiday at a resort when damage occurred on a bus, 2 females involved and the driver wanted assistance, you have to be very careful how you get hold of them, had one pulling the other as I was holding on to her, the offender was shouting and screaming at me and putting up a struggle, the police bless 'em were seen at a distant just cruising to the scene in the TPU (obviously no one had told them they were not compliant) and by the time they arrived I was worn out!!!!

BTW, got a nice reward from the bus operator though and free rides!!

Thank you no. I don't go looking for them , They find me.

The assualt arrest .... an officer that came (one of about 10), asked me , hey aren't you the one who chanced the Guatemalan down on foot after he smashed up
about 5 cars , I says uh yeah? Then he says , you looking for a job? I says Noooo, if fact I'll be avoiding this area for awhile.

And I avoided the area for months,

It's about seeing me in the position of the victim and doing something I would want done for me ,,
and that's pretty much it mate.

The problem in this country is that if you make a citizens arrest you stand a very good chance of getting stabbed or kicked to death outside your own house with your family watching.
