Heard a cuckoo this morning, very loud; frankly I thought I was going mad! Fortunately my neighbour had also heard the cuckoo yesterday - phew... can put away the straightjacket for another year then. We have a small copse across the road and it seems that the cuckoo has taken up residence in there, does he not know how early it is!

I think the earliest cuckoo on record is mid April. So you're now in the position I was when I saw a big cat in the UK. Everybody says 'yeah, right, whatever ...' but nobody really believes you.
My money's on a collared dove.

Well Ian i understand what your saying about a big cat as we have had sightings here in Kent over the years, although things have gone quite of late,
I know what you mean though as i had left my car in our village garage for an M.O.T on my way home from work and walked home about a mile at 00.30 and heard a stange noise behind me and stopped and looked back up the road and between the street lights saw something very large bound across the road from one field to another, i know what a fox is like and i would say it was as big as an Alsatian but it was gone in a flash and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up
Whenever i come down that road late at nite i keep an eye open but as yet i have not had any luck seeing anything,
And Chris I'm with Ian that it was probably that Dove, so your not going Cuckooooo!

Well the Cuckoo was also confirmed by my wife this morning. As for Collared Doves... pish to Collared Doves - we have loads of the b*ggers and believe me I know the difference between the two 
Personnally I think it's come across on the southerly winds and is at this very moment laying out its towel and sun glasses (won't need these for a bit). Mind you this is the first Cuckoo we have had this close, probably a bit cuckoo itself!

Maybe it's one from last year and had a prticually good end of season session down the pub

Sometimes Collard Doves 'coo' just twice (instead of the normal 3) sounding like a Cuckoo. Cuckoos migrate here in the Spring don't they?

There's a pair of Canada geese that spend the summer on our village pond, they usually return in late March or early April. They arrived 10 days ago!!
They bring back last years brood, and after a few days, they drive them away to fend for themselves. In the last four years, not one of the youngsters has failed to return.
Mother Nature is wonderful, and full of surprises.
