My Lancaster website now finished

Post by speedbird591 »

About a month ago I introduced the WIP that was a website I was building in memory of my Dad's cousin, Teddy Davis. Teddy was a FE on Lancasters with 467 squadron and was killed in action in 1943.

Since I showed you the unfinished site I've been given a wonderful portfolio of documents and photos by Teddy's family. There are letters home, his logbook, photos of his crew, press cuttings etc. I've also got a copy of the official RAF Night Raid Report for his last flight and by comparing the flight plan from that with other reports I've worked out what happened to Lancaster ED504 in it's last couple of hours. The author of a book on RAF Bottesford has also given me a lot of relevant material and identified Teddy on some photos from his collection. I've incorporated the best of it into the site and tried to make it easily readable with a lot of graphics. So the pages will be a bit slow to load if you have a slow connection, but I think it's worth waiting!

Anyway, the site's pretty much finished now and I'm quietly very pleased at the amount of information I've gathered and am able to present. It's just a family tribute to a young boy who died before he reached manhood and fortunately his sister is still alive to see it.

Hope you like it.

Very good. Very sad as well. I hope you don't mind but I forwarded the link to a few people I know.

Thanks, Simon. I'm glad you think it's worth showing to people, so please do!

Although I've told it as Teddy's story, it's really the story of all of those young boys and, yes, it is very sad. I've found doing this project very humbling. I think it's changed my view on life.

Well done Ian. It's a fine work, and obvious you put quality time and great deal of thought creating the memorial to your fathers cousin and all who sevred on Lancaster.
Doing a good work will no doubt cause reflection of one owns blessings recieved in life. ...... certainly of one who posesses heart.

Joe

Cheers.

A worthy tribute to a brave man. Its good that we have the tools now to create such memorials

I will also link it at my online squadron site; we are very much Bomber Command orientated there and this will be of great interest.

Great work Ian, you've done him proud. Your dad's experiences look like an interesting read too; will get to that later.

First class Ian. You've done a superb job telling a story that really needed to be told. He would be very proud of your efforts I'm sure.

Gentlemen, thank you very much for your kind words. It seems that I've managed to hit the right 'atmosphere' with it. His sister hasn't seen the finished site yet but she was very pleased with the draft one so it should be OK.

Her daughter tells me that after all those years of not speaking about Teddy she has now said that she wants to go and visit his grave for the first time to say goodbye before she's too old.

If you've found anything incorrect on the site or anything's not displaying properly, leave it a day or two before telling me so I can revel for a little while longer in the thought of having done something right for once
