VC10's At Brize.

Post by VC10 »

I suppose this is a question for Tonks really.

Today en-route from Warrington to Guildford today I swung by Brize in the hope I could get a VC10 fix, but all there was only a C-17 doing circuits. Talking to one of the other people there, they said the '10's rarely fly these days due to fuel costs & hours. Is that true and am I wasting my time & petrol going to Brize on the off chance? Or are some taking part in the Libyan crisis thus reducing the chance of seeing one flying at Brize??

It was in the news today that VC-10s are supporting the operations over Libya, so that could account for the lack of them at Brize. No doubt Tonks and HC are busy down there too.

There are not so many VC 10's now so most aircraft servicable at any one time will be doing something.

Were the TriStars absent too?

There was one Tristar on the ramp.

Perhaps Tonks can confirm, but I think there are about 16 (maybe less) left in service.

Best place to look is at the bottom of this page: http://www.vc10.net/History/RAFVC10s.html and count the ones marked 'active'. Mind you, some of those could be undergoing maintenance or just standing still for other reasons.
Due to shortages and cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off.
