Dave, the third chap is the MSO (Mission System Operator).
So that will probably be any non-pilot who is too young/expensive/good looking to be made redundant from the Tornado/VC10/Nimrod/Herk fleet who has managed to avoid being made a rear door gunner on the new Chinooks!
Speaking as an ex (occasional) Door Gunner myself (on the little known Puma Gunship!), I think that the article is pretty correct, but only as far as the RAF Regiment gunners who manned the other GPMG!

Perhaps they put names in a hat and pulled that one out! Sorry, that would have been cheap, if the MOD was involved they probably had a comitee working for years on it. I suppose it might have a connection with four previous tankers...starting with a V! Those Oxbridge types are clever sods
