That bring back some memories! I had a Meccano set gieven to me by a cousin when I was only four. My dad built a replica of a London Tram for me since I loved them. I noticed an ad for The Bricklayer in the maagzine and I also had that. Anyway, thanks for the linek, Gary!

Interesting thread Garry. But I'm a little confused on the terminology being used. When you say spanner. Is it your meaning to describe this?

Or a adjustable wrench used on hex nuts.

Thanks to Joe, I learned something new, but I've forgotten what it was ...but I did remember a story about an erk (or similar) who appeared at the Stores counter and asked the Quartermaster Sgt for "a big shifter"
QMS - You 'orrible little man! if you come here for a tool, you specify exactly what you need, you do not request a 'big shifter', you request a 15-inch adjustable spanner or whatever size the job calls for!! Do you understand me!!!?

Erk: Well, yes, Sergeant, but it doesn't really matter - I only want it for a 'ammer.

To avoid any further confusion and possible unfortunate misunderstanding, here's a link to all you wanted to know and more about the Meccano spanner - http://www.nzmeccano.com/34.php that's from that same website which started all this ( no, that was Garry ).
Spanners are what engineers use to tighten their nuts, fitters and plumbers use the 'orrible adjustable spanners (a.k.a. adjustable wrenches) guaranteed to ruin the flats of any delicate hex nuts.
Garry - was 'brickplayer' the kit I had which came with hundreds of tiny clay bricks which you built up using flour paste as 'cement' - I really liked that.
