It's one of types you don't climb aboard so much as "put it on"
Apparently they were murder to work on...a credit that they got everything into such a small frame but try and get to anything

I've heard similar words from some of my colleagues, some of whom are just old enough (or were just young enough at the time) to have trained on the Gnat (as an aside, in a previous life, on of my instructors was the first to graduate on the Hawk!).Garry Russell wrote:It's one of types you don't climb aboard so much as "put it on"![]()
Snug? Cosy? Certainly not roomy! Low enough to warrant a lift or pit in the hangar floor if you need to get under it!

Re: Red Gnats
Sometimes it's difficult to get the true scale of things...a liner often looks much much smaller than you imagine offshore out to sea.. until you see it in the distance as a background to the harbour, then it looks enormous.
With this, the scene where they were towing it really showed the scale especially as it was bouncing around a bit like a toy.
The tailpipe was very close to the ground too and the scene with the chap loading the smoke was reminiscent of some of the YouTube videos of guys making ready their large scale models.

Seen it before, but is very good.
Any idea which airfield Noakes is at, at the beginning? The aircraft taking off looks like a 748/Andover but sounds like an F-27.

The sound is probably just the way the mike picked it up in those days
It was difficult then to record sounds accurately
My impression was that it was a 32 Sqn 748 Andover CC2
