Having been around all 3 prop configs of the Herc, the current AE2100 with 6-blade Schimitar prop is significantly quieter inside and out compared to the T56 with the Hamilton Standard prop. It's also significantly smoother.

The "loudness" of the Herc configs I list as follows (loudest to least loud)-

C-130/T56/Hamilton Standard
C-130/T56/NP2000 (8-blade scimitar)
C-130/AE2100/Dowty R391

Difference in noise level at takeoff? Maybe 20% externally.

The C-130J sightings I've had have been notable by their quietness

They're still Allisons. Only real change in the AE2100 over the T56/501D is that the AE2100 has a digital engine computer versus the analogue one on the T56/501D. You can (and they have) put the Aeroproducts or Hamilton Standard prop on an AE2100 without any real issue except a software change to cover the different prop control sequence and different vibration profile (which is why the NP2000 was selected for the T56 update by Snow Aviation and the US Navy because the 8 blades allow for the existing sensors to be used since 8 is just a multiple of 4. ). Funniest part of it all is that the AE2100 only gained about 5 degrees C on the flat rate to 4250HP over the last T56 models. The big improvement was the prop which gave more thrust and better fuel efficiency.

Back in the early 70's I had an Aunt and Uncle who lived directly under the circuit of the local USAF base. The C-130's flying low over their home would actually mess up their TV reception. I can still hear those C-130's in my head.

We used to get that every time any aircraft flew over the house on approach. It was the VHF TV that was affected, the old b&W days.

The pic used to wobble and sometimes break up.

That particular mark affects RC model aeroplanes and can be quite damaging to the ears

My Dad once said the same thing about Argosies at RAF Benson in the '60s. This was when we had VHF TV aerials.
