That area is mountainous and heavily timbered - near impossible to search on foot, and as the 1937 Stinson accident showed, very hard to search from the air, too.
No reports of fire - we're just finished the dry season, and a fire would have been spotted. A DH Dragon, into trees at what, 55mph? Could be survivable.

Hi Mike,

I'd no idea what the area it went missing in was like mate. Heavily wooded doesn't bode well for something made of ply and fabric :( It wouldn't do to write them off though.. there's always hope until they're found ;)

Hi Mike,
I'll be listening out for anything on Vic radio.
Those reports you linked about low cloud obscuring valleys and elevated points would make the search horrible.

There is a bit more info this morning. The video from the search helicopter will give you some idea of the conditions, and the country around there.

Hi Chaps,

AS of 1145 UK time [2045 in Qeensland] i have been talking via chat on the OZX forum and the chap had not heard anymore news on the missing plane,

Its been overcast and poor visibility in the area Tuesday, they are saying the plane may have run out of fuel ,seems strange as the Pilot was 68 yrs and has been flying many years,

Just have to wait and see but it does not look good does it.

Cheers,

Roger.

No Rog'.. not good at all. :(

The circumstances still seem a little vague though don't they. As you say, an experienced pilot as he was shouldn't run out of fuel but you can only push your luck so many times. Flying in poor vis with nothing more than a DG and wet compass (if that).. one can understand him becoming disorientated no matter how experienced.

Still hope they find the wreck site and survivors but chances of the latter happening are fading fast.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for your info, national TV news after dark Tuesday confirms no sign of them yet.
If you look at how far they had travelled, and how close to home they were when the weather closed in, their fuel would have been getting low. (see the map which MikeW gave a link to)
I am merely a low and slow short hop sim flyer, so the intricacies of fuel and load management that the VA and real pilots have to cope with are beyond my ken, but lost in cloud, goodness knows how much they used before putting out the alert.
