Video - flying into Bhutan

Post by TobyV »

Found this on Youtube, sadly it's not the 146, but shows what an interesting approach this is. Not sure if he got it quite right (being rather off to the left and then having to turn at the last minute). In a VHS video on Hatfield that I have, Dick Bishop (R. E. Bishop's son) states the "runway appears over a ridge at about a mile and a half finals", which to me implies that one is at least aligned with it even if it is not immediately visible. Anyway...

The approach shown is absolutely copybook. A straight in approach is quite impossible . If you look at about 5:45 in the film you will see that there is a promontory off to the right at no more than about 1.5 miles finals and if you went further to the right than was shown on this approach it would definitely be a brown underwear and bicycle clips job

Yes I always knew it was an unconventional approach - I just never realized how unconventional :-O. It certainly puts Kai Tak in its place. ;)

Great minds think alike Paul you beat me to it, i was going to say "where's the Checker Board?"

i don't know if the camera man was having trouble with the vibration on the aircraft or he was "Frightened out of his life"

Great flying that's for sure,

Cheers,

Roger.
