BUA VC10

Post by paul26may »

I would like to do a London to South America run in a BUA VC10. Has anyone on here done the same and is there anything I might consider? Did they for instance stop off along the way as I am aware that Buenos Aires was involved somehow? On the subject I have made the following my current desktop image and must say it's one of the best photos I have seen of the VC10 and makes a change from the many BOAC images available (spiffing as they are!). What would it be doing at Ringway by the way? I know they were fairly regular visitors and did trooping flights. :excited:

I'm not au fait with the BUA timetables but the last time I flew from London to Buenos Aires in a 744 it took 15 hours non-stop

That's a bit beyond a VC10’s range so, at a guess, I'd say West Africa, probably Dakar, as a refuelling stop. It sounds like a good project - don't forget to take some sandwiches!

Dakar? Who said Dakar? :worried:

Madrid, Las Palmas (and Lisbon) would have been much more hospitable!

British United ran a return service from Gatwick to Accra with the BAC One-Eleven, with stops at Lisbon, Las Palmas, Bathurst (now Banjul, Gambia) and Freetown and it's not surprising that VC10's on the way to South America would stop in one or other of these airports too. Runway length and high temperatures wouldn't have been a problem for the VC10.

In that case, here's 3 more you might like. Part of the Michael Harries Collection held at the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, all taken on a sunny summer's day (remember those?) in 1969.

Heathrow to Khormaksar on I think the first BUA VC10 in 1966, one of the ex pats here is ex RAF and when discharged worked on the BUA aircraft in and out of Aden, seems the VC 10 's were hangered ASP after landing to thaw the fuel tanks to get the water collected at high Alt ????
