Seriously mate, this grinds my gears. I don't care what sort of tablet device it is, but see these people you see holding it up like a camera, or talking into it whilst holding it as if it where a phone, seriously, they really want to take a look at themselves in the mirror, or do something useful with their existence like turning themselves into glue at the nearest rendering plant. If you want a phone, get a phone. If one wants a larger touch screen device, one gets a laptop or tablet with a touch screen. If one ones a camera, one gets a camera, or a camera phone that doesn't make one look like a complete tw@t. Technology is great when used appropriately. ;)

Whoa! Finally caught Ben out on something

You can't make a phone call or send a text with an iPad because it doesn't have a telecommunications facility. It's a tablet, not a phone, the sim card slot is an option and is for data transfer only.

This is how it works for me. I have a little phone. It's a Samsung Galaxy mini Android that cost about £70 and it has a Tesco pay-as-you-go sim card. It's tiny and cheap and I spend about £5 a month on texts and phone calls and looking up train running and bus information. No contract, no worries about insuring it, losing it or breaking it. Ben can relax as my technology is used quite appropriately

Now the money that I would have spent on an iPhone contract over say, 24 months, goes instead on buying an iPad. Although you may think that it's smarter to have an iPhone because it's smaller, it's actually the size of the iPad that makes it so much better. The apps are the same and all the smartphone trickery is the same (except voice and text comms) but the difference is that you can see it clearly and comfortably. It's an absolute joy to use but the only way to know that is to use one. And it really is quite small - probably smaller than you think. I take mine everywhere either in an inside jacket pocket or a small shoulder bag or a pocket in my work bag. As I said before, I don't carry an iPod, laptop, books, newspapers, magazines or anything that can be in PDF because it's all on the pad. It's very easy to email with and the popup keyboard is easy to use. I can even touch type with it. Pop into an Apple store and get someone to show you an iPad 3 with retina display. Have a look at that and then compare it to an iPhone before committing yourself to a contract. I barely get to read the paper at work with people wanting to look at mine and many of them are moving away from smartphones to tablets.

Mine has 32Gb memory which is plenty and it has WiFi and 3G so I can access the internet outside of wifi coverage. I use a 3 data sim which gives me 10Gb for £15 a month. I rarely exceed 2Gb but as a 2Gb bundle is £10 I'd rather pay the extra for the peace of mind. As the iPad can be used as a wifi hotspot you can connect your phone or laptop to the internet through its 3G connection. No contract of course, so if I want to upgrade after a year I could sell the iPad for at least half what I paid for it and the cost still works out the same as I'd budgeted for.

Obviously, it doesn't bother me if anybody else buys one or not but it would be better to be sure which you want before committing yourself to something so expensive. :worried:

Ian :)

I wasn't having a pop at you Ian, but it really gets my goat. I was in Heathrow last week and one such "glue" candidate was doing as I described and holding it like a phone (possibly using Skype or something - but that's not the point.) If I hadn't have been late for my flight I'd have asked him if he realised he looked like a d1ck.

I'm the same as you. It's important to me to look cool (or at least think that I do  ). I think it's because most of my working life I've been in the public eye and being aware of how I look has become second nature. All those bored people on aircraft and trains, airports, stations and hotels with nothing better to look at than what I'm doing. You'd never catch me looking ridiculous - except in the mud on my mountain bike probably!

I just look like a fat dad when im on my bike, which is very rare these days as my spine is knackered so all I can really do is walk and eat (and get fat) lol

Eating is exercise. I think the health industry overlook the number of calories you burn up digesting cheese and chocolate. We should start a new campaign. Eat your way to health!

I'm sure we can find statistics to support the theory :worried:

Hang on - there's probably an app ...

You can also tie in the advice often given to drink plenty of water and natural herbal extracts with the constant raising and lowering of the arm which not only burns calories but helps increase blood flow :guinn:

If you find that mundane exercise and diet routine boring, you can always do it with a friend

I often stand up to make a cup of coffee or get a can from the pantry. Does that count?
