Bomb map of London during the Blitz

Hi Folks

Been trying off & on all day to access Ian's posted link.
As yet its always failed for me, (though 404 now, rather than site not found).
Looking forward to viewing it whenever.

Not in any way decrying what London went through,
just reflecting on what I'd read previously.

If you think London's bombing was bad.....
London at 607 sq miles,
Malta at <100 sq miles.
Supposedly more bombs fell on Malta in 3 months
than did the whole of London, in the entire war.

Guess both of those pale into insignificance
when compared with the 1.6 million tons dropped on Germany.

It's a new site, hence it's had a lot of publicity and is swamped.

Cheers for that Roger, that link seems to work.

I'm not sure how accurate it is though. I know from reading the George Edwards biography that Vickers at Weybridge was hit, but there is no record of it on the map. I guess this was probably never officially recorded at the time though as the didn't want people to hear about bombings which dented the war effort.

I was born after the war but I can certainly remember seeing the resultss of the blitz all round London when I was a young lad. Very disturbing to see bomned out homes and churches with piles of rubble everywhere.

I went on a school holiday to London in 1968.

There were still a few bombsites then and in St. Malo, France a bombed out area was still there when I last went in 2000.

Take time to repair such damage.

I would have liked to have seen where the bombs landed on Horseguards Parade, damaging the Guards Memorial, but when I zoom in, the red dots disappear and all I have is the map of London. Not much use really.

That map started me off looking and i came across this but its the only one i could find of Horse Guards but by the look of it, it did'nt get that many Hits,

Paul. I managed to zoom into Horse Guards without losing the markers but I can't access the info apart from that they were HE. The site is getting a lot of publicity today as it's been onthe Beeb so I think it's just struggling. Should be OK in a day or two.

Roger, Ian, thanks for that. You can still see the damage to the Guards Memorial by the way; very similar to the Egyptian Obelisk on the Embankment, though that was caused by a Zeppelin bomb.
