Any ideas which Comet?

Post by John »

I spotted this Comet nose in the back of this Rolls-Royce Motor Cars PR shot...

Any idea which airframe it's from?

Kind regards

Seems I've answered my own question! It's the old node from Gatwick...

It looks a lot better now!

Oo-er.. it surely does look better now. Nice phot John  I wondered if it was the old Comet 4 trainer at London Colney but it's obviously not :)

Yep. It was the Strathallan Comet that eventually ended up at Gatwick as just a nose in BOAC livery and was corroding when I last saw it in the early nineties. Already then there were bubbles on the bare metal under the lacquer. The moss on the pic above makes it look rough but that was the least of it's probs. When I saw it, it looked pristine, until you went up to it and the...ahhh :worried:

Just as well it was saved but a pity the whole airframe didn't enjoy continued preservation.

It will be save indoors in a hot climate.

Some say it was a shame it went there. In reality I don't think it would still exist if it hadn't

Nice link mate.. ta

John.. what I meant was the Comet4 trainer at London Colney doesn't sit on it's nose gear as far as I can remember and it certainly doesn't (or didn't) look anywhere near as good as that one. AFAIK, the London Colney trainer is still there but years of being open to the public have taken their toll on the old girl. I'm not sure if stuff missing from it was missing anyway or if it's a consequence of Joe Public 'borrowing' bits for posterity. Still.. there aren't many Comet nose sections you can sit and play in so good on em for keeping it open ;)

As a kid I seem to remember there was one at the science museum, I wonder if it's still there?

It seems it's at the out station at Wroughton...

And looks identical to all those years ago!

It seems there are a few around!

The one at Wroughton was ex Kensington and is G-ANAV

Wroughton also had a Comet 4 simulator/trainer...it was in Dan Air livery and only superficially looked like a comet from the outside.
