I've just read that BBC report that Paul has linked to. I hadn't realised that he'd turned down a place at Cambridge to become a navigator in Bomber Command. How selfless. And then to lose his fiancée to a bomb is just so ironically heartbreaking.
Bless him, what a lovely character, he made all our lives richer.

Re: Sir Patrick Moore R.I.P
Despite his high profile in the world of astronomy he always refused to be classed as anything other than an amateur and this from the World's authority on the Moon.
Quirkily eccentric, he epitomised the very best of British, unique and irreplaceable.
His books were always very readable and it was easy to understand a subject that can soon get bogged down in scientific mumbo jumbo. He had a marvelous ability to talk high tech in simple language and we have all learned a lot from his uncle like approach.

One of my favourite TV personalities who I always found fascinating to watch.

How very sad, he was on a "sky at night" last Monday, looking frail. An absolute quintessentially British one-off.
