Hi Gary,
Those films take me back, hours spent up on the Queens building watching it all going on but what was interesting to me in that London Airport film was picking out all those cars in the view of the car park, most of which i had worked on at that time as i was a Panel Beater back then.
The Austin A35, A55, A40 and Morris Minor all of which i owned at one time mainly because they had the series A engine in them, IMHO one of the best of that time! [except the A55 of course].
Sorry about that, nice 707's etc
Thanks for posting,
Roger.

Whenever these old scenes come up, or watching old movies the background is what I'm looking it.
As for panel beaters, a virtually dead trade down our way.
they fit new panels and knock to odd dent and fill and blend but the old tradition craft is all but gone now, locally at least

I enjoyed that Garry...It was taken just before I joined BEA on Vanguards...No jetways and pushbacks then and the Vanguards had airstairs fitted to both the front and rear doors

Talking to the boys at Brooklands a while ago about this, it's not a 'local' problem mate. The 'craft' has gone because it's a sign of the times.. aircraft aren't built this way (by and large) any more so the need for skilled panel beaters has gone too.they fit new panels and knock to odd dent and fill and blend but the old tradition craft is all but gone now, locally at least

Re: Look At Life...City Of The Air 1964
Well
this was why i finished Panel Beating as that was exactly what i was doing, fitting new panels and the odd repair and after spending 5 years as an apprentice i should have gone into car restoration but it was not like it is now, there were not many people even thinking of it as there were so many old cars about you did'nt think at the time what was coming, by Golly i wish i knew what i know now, the Austin 7's Austin 10's i had back then and they all went to the scrap yard!
i went driving trucks in 1964 and spent the rest of my working life with them until i retired,

Re: Look At Life...City Of The Air 1964
So true Roger....as to modern trends Dave, many 'engineers' like washing machines and the like is just down now to know which pump to replace or board to change. There is little or no repair as such.
I had a music keyboard that all the 'D's would become intermittent, then all the 'A's.
When all the notes of the same have a fault it's usually a CPU fault as each octive is the same note just half the value of the one an octive above and twice that of the one below.
It went away to be repaired and when I asked what had broken they didn't know. It went back to the factory where they just fitted all new key pads and new boards...just changed all the works within the box

Re: Look At Life...City Of The Air 1964
Those Look At Life films are very interesting and were all filmed on good quality 35mm colour film by the Rank Organisation and were shown in cinemas from the late 50's through to 1969 or thereabouts by which time around 500 short films had been made.
Glad to see that they are now being digitally restored and are becoming available on DVD being distributed by Network DVD in several volumes http://www.networkdvd.net/advanced_sear ... &x=32&y=11.....not cheap by any means but a fantastic collection of some of the most interesting cameos of life preserved for ever on DVD.
Be aware that they are sold also in smaller compilations but to avoid any duplications then go for the complete Volumes which so far have 5 available which covers 250 films so hopefully they may carry on and complete the set in due course.

Re: Look At Life...City Of The Air 1964
I used to love this series of films.Sometimes they were better than the main feature film.Recently BBC4(I think) were transmitting some of these, although I can't quite recall the programme title.
EricT
ps when you look back on this series, you can sense how they encapsulated the feeling of the time that the future was optimistic and something to look forward to.How times change.
