I've found an old Shorts advert partially showing the Shorts works at Sydenham and the EX Royal Naval Air yard. You'll see in the upper left hand side a number of MOD type hangers in the area that made up the RN yard. Any idea what type of hangers these are?
The rounded roofed ones could be Type K, the single pitched roof could be Type B1 or Bellman, the others with asymmetrical pitched roofs could be Type C.
It looks to me like a Boulton & Paul VR2 hangar which were built for aircraft factories and armament training schools. Each section was 100' x 150' and 20' high at the doors.
Other examples were at Ringway, Moreton Valence, and Squires Gate.
Thanks very much! Like all airfields thinks never stayed the same for long, but those to Hangers are still there! I wonder if they are listed as they must be 80 or so years old. I didn't know that RNAY Sydenham had been responsible for many of the Sea Vixen upgrades (don't know if that was a good or bad thing)
The pairs of angular hangars in your second B&W pic look very similar if not identical to those at Shoreham (presently I cannot find any good photos, I have some in books but no scanner)
I'd say you were spot on Toby! I'm still struggling a bit with the ones on the far side of the airfield though. I'm not sure what the difference is between the T1 and the T2. The MOD doc tells of a variety of versions of the T2, T2 simply refers to the construction type. Some had windows half way up, some didn't. The Bellmans (it seems) didn't have windows at all, so I'm inclined to think that the 3 hangers in a row straight off the nose of the 360 are T2's, which then begs the question as to what the type is in the bulldog pick?
-Edit and if you check the Bird's eye photography on bing, you can see that that hangar has been re-clad and still stands. One of the old ones the other side of the runway is still extant in that photography but it's in such a state it's hard to tell what it is!
