Re: The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling!
It doesn't seem fair when the papers are full of how Earth is about to avoid a collision with an asteroid and then you get hit on the head by that lot. Jeez. I'd be looking for somebody to complain to...

Nothing you should worry about my little pretty.
.....
sorry , couldn't pass that one by.
Seriously though,
No kidding mate. The large pic of the flash going accross the sky and the headlines OMG 1000 injured.
I completely went into panic. I thought the Astroid had hit.
but no it was just one of those pesky meteorites Russia has a propensity for.
It was rather
of outer space, throwing a asteriod at us to only disguise the curve ball she intended hit us with.
I sincerly hope the best for the people affected, I would probably be out of my mind.

No Dorothy ... like homes... they're sized like homes.
Re: Meteorite hits Russia
Someone was explaining to me how the asteroid could potentially hit the Earth, but it went way over my head.

Re: Meteorite hits Russia
I know it's a bit late to panic now it's all over. But. I just read this description of the event by NASA.
The meteorite was the size of a bus and weighed 7,000 tonnes. It was travelling at 40,000 mph when it exploded 12-15 miles above the Earth with the power of 20 atomic bombs and leaving a trail 300 miles long.
No wonder the Russians thought it was the end of the World
Is it OK to panic now or am I too late?

The sonic boom was impressive, made me jump! About 15 seconds in...

There's also impressive footage from car 'dash cams'.

I find this stuff fascinating!

Re: Meteorite hits Russia
fascinating indeed.
I acquried a piece of meteorite about a dozen years back from a friend who sold minerals and gems.
Got it, and a few other minerals, as a bonus helping him with his electrical needs when he opened his new store.
I have just a small piece, I took a number of pictures of it to show it's shape and surface texture.
One, showing a ridge, or vein along the top forward edge.
Two and three are taken at different angles with both light intensity and direction changes of a side that appears dimpled but mostly smooth.
Four and five of the opposite side - which is mostly of a coarse texture. Again about the same angle but major change in light direction and intensity.

This is a link to the full image files if you'd like to see it more closely. 2-3 mb in size.

I hope that link works, I just opened the account
do anyone see a .. kinda tribal looking face mask thing going on in the third image...
