Can you fly around the globe in your average GA airplane?

Post by DogTailRed2 »

Looking at the globe it looks possible that you could fly around the globe, if not to all the countries on the globe, using a basic GA airplane like a Cessna or Piper.
If we rule out safety and flew a 152 to it's fuel limits could you do it?
I reckon I could get to Australia hopping between some of the islands. In fact the longest hop looks like Scotland to Iceland, or possibly Greenland.
Obviously places like Ascension, Pearl Harbour would be out of range. Or would they *-)

Hello Mate :hello:

I've done this quite a few times though not in your average GA. I think the Dove has been the smallest and I fitted an 'optional' internal tank. You may think crossing some of the larger water areas is a worry.. transiting Russia is far from easy.. FS doesn't populate it as well as you'd presume, not in FS9 anyway.

BTW.. you'll probably find that Greenland to Canada is the longest hop going on the Northern route. For crossing the Pacific, you'd have to head for the Alutians which is another long haul.

Look for the longest leg then choose what can do it.. if necessary, after fitting internal tanks :)

Hi,

Interesting thought  something that might be worth trying in FSX but Ascension, Pearl Harbour would be out of range,

I like to fly the Cessna 206 Station Air in the sim but even that has only a range around 700 nm or so and i think Pearl is 1200nm to Alaska at its nearest and about the same to Africa from Ascension but you could cheat and fill up on route :dunno:

I believe someone has done it in either an R-22 or R-44 for real so it shouldn't be a problem, apart from needing quite a bit of time off to do it at 100 knots!

Yes.. I remember that story. Just having had a look online, the Robbie was the helicopter she learned to fly in.. the record was done in a Bell 407 flying hops of around 550miles per day.

Do it in a helicopter Ted.. I dare ya

I've done it twice in the FS9 King Air. I did manage to get to Hawaii but ran out of fuel over Maui - they're not a real good glider! :worried:

It's a bit out of date but there's some food for thought here...

IRL I've seen the odd GA aircraft on a round the World flight

Most recent was a couple of years back, a Mooney M-20

You could stop off at the Vágar Airport on the Faroe Islands on route to Iceland...

I've done that once before.. I think that was the only time I've been there

One things for sure.. with each new sim, it gets easier as the airport count rises.. in some cases, significantly. If I remember right, the first time I did it was in Greg Peppers Convair 240.. an odd choice I know but it was a nice model with a nice panel.. probably in FS2000. Russia probably had a dozen airfields in those days  I think my last RTW was in a Shack following an authentic 'Westabout' route. Took me just over a week I seem to remember. Interesting thing about that trip was that it got me into AI.. almost everywhere I went was empty! :-O
