Yes indeed mate. I looked hard at the name on Peter's grandad's cap talley and decided it couldn't be Riviera. Also, a search of requisitioned and new build trawlers in WW1 didn't show a Riviere so the particular ship you've referenced was in reality, the only option It's great that Peter now has a phot to put to the name and fortunate Riviere was so 'different' that a phot exists. I found after my dad died and I was trying very hard to find ref pics of each of his MN ships that it's not easy. One particular ship.. Peribonka (Saguenay Terminals Shipping Co.) still eludes me to this day. I've detail of exactly where it went and what it did.. it's entire history but not one single shot of her wearing that name. Saguenay Terminals renamed their fleet after the war and Peribonka became Sun Walt (they were all named 'Sun' something) and I was fortunate to find a single shot of her wearing that name
Yes mate. She was built as SS Newton Moore in 1937 by J L Thompson and Sons Ltd, Sunderland It was one of 3 ships that actually started Saguenay Terminals Shipping Company (Quebec) in 1939 and was impressed shortly after for war service. At the end of the war, Sagterms bought more ships and in line with the 'new era' these were all named 'Sun ***' hence Peribonka's renaming 'Sun Walt' in around 1946 to bring it in line with the others.
Sadly not. I've an article about her launch as Newton Moore and a pile of info for her as Peribonka but unfortunately, no shots. You can see from that shot she's just having her new name painted on.. a few days earlier and she'd still have had Peribonka on the bow. Sod's law
The decision to rename the fleet was taken in '47 not '46 so that shot is probably '47 or '48 vintage. The name incidentally is from a Canadian province/district. Can't make out what a Sunwalt (Sun walt) is or was. I've always presumed the name to be a French derivative but there isn't a 'walt' in the French language as far as I can tell As unlikely a name as Peribonka is, at least I know where it comes from
It's nice to have a shot of the ship anyway
