Boston bombs

Post by Airspeed »

Early this morning, looking out of the french windows, listening to the frogs and seeing sunshine: then the radio tells us about the Boston Marathon bombs.
Condolences to all involved.
Somebody rang in to say that 77 bombs were detonated in Iraq during the elections, without mention. Rather silly comment, we thought.
If the broadcasters gave every death or injury a respectful degree of coverage, there would not be enough hours in the day to cover them.
I repeat my condolences to our friends in the USA.
Cheers, Mike.

Sadly, it was not a silly comment at all. At least 55 people were killed in a string of explosions in Baghdad yesterday . For Australia, however, it happened in the middle of the night , and so was overtaken by the events in Boston by the time you were up and about. Time differences can have a very distorting effect !

I was not trying to say that the Iraq bombs were insignificant, just that there is only so much news they can disseminate in 5 minutes on regional radio.
I apologise for not having highlighted this
I have no doubt that while I have been typing this, there have been multiple rapes, murders and other unfortunate deaths around the Globe. Most of these will never get mentioned outside their local area.
What you say is indeed true, that timing does have a large influence, particularly when our regional radio station news is 5 minutes each half of the hour, and the national news about the same on the hour.
I also have no doubt that the carnage in Iraq received plenty of coverage on our 24/7 TV news channel.
I certainly meant no disrespect to the Iraqis, who have suffered terribly despite the presence of many well meaning outsiders. In fact, I have long feared deeply for them once the coalition forces depart.
Cheers, Mike.

This is the first I've heard of it Mike. I didn't have the news on late last night and I've not had it on this morning. TBH.. knowing what has happened, I'd rather skip the news on TV for a while.

Earlier today, the radio reported identification of suspects and knowledge that they were armed and dangerous.
Friday 7 pm news tells us one suspect shot (now dead?) Manhunt for second suspect who escaped the gunfight.
Cheers, Mike.
