Got to make a decision guys - Time for a career change?

Hi guys,

just a quick update.

The good news is; The rail company contacted me today and offered me a position.

The bad news; Its to commence work with them on Monday 13th May! Which is less than two weeks notice.

I'm absolutely over the moon at having the opportunity but I'm not sure I'll be released from work in under a fortnight when technically I'm contracted to work a full months notice.

I'm going to see the boss in the morning with the news and a polite request to leave the job early.

What a rollercoaster of emotions its been today.

Wow, that strikes me as a bit unreasonable of the train people, most companies/employers expect 1 months notice, I'll bet the train folk do too. Perhaps they are not used to folk leaving the. Hopefully the Job will be accommodating for you. Another thing to bear in mind, how understanding will the new company be with things like outstanding court cases?
I loved it upon retirement, I got expenses every time I was required at court which was a first. I was a bit miffed when I moved abroad they were unwilling to pay for flights and accommodations to come back, I guess those cases were dropped

Unfortunately the competition is fierce for these kind of jobs.

You can guarantee they'll be someone ready to step into my spot if I turn it down.

Cut-throat recruitment. But I guess they can afford to do as they please with such demand.

Its a very much 'take it or leave it' situation for me now.

There's no doubt I'm extremely lucky to have such an offer on the table.

Not really looking forward to speaking with the boss in the morning. Especially as I only recently had a meeting with him.

PS Garry your correct mate. I asked HR about the short notice and it was down to slots on courses changing all the time.

Yes, that'd be right Welcome to the incompetent and irrational bureaucracy of the railway industry. We learnt everything from Indian Railways

This happens all the time to people already in the industry. They spend months unable to give any information or dates and then it all has to happen yesterday. I wouldn't worry about it. You won't be the only one that will have to give a month's notice - everybody does - they're just taking a chance to fill a course they should have organised weeks ago. There'll be another course starting in a few weeks so if you can't get released just ask for another start date with a month's notice. It's easier to cope with this sort of rubbish once you're in and are used to it. You just bat it back at your manager and let them sort it out which is what they're paid for

Anyway - congratulations on the green light for your new career. Or a 'proceed aspect' as you'll call it from now on

Hi Ian,

I was told today by the lady in HR that if I didn't accept the offer then I'd go in a talent pool for the next six months.

Sadly there is no guarantee of a spot on further courses if they decide not to run one. Who knows?

Whats really upset the wife and I was the first call I had was an offer of employment commencing on 8th July.

I was over joyed! plenty of time to absorb the job offer, prepare mentally and also I'd be able to go on holiday with the family in June.

However, about twenty minutes after receiving this call, I got another call, from the same lady.

She said there had been a mistake. The job offer was actually to start 13th May. Less than two weeks time!

Crash bang wallop.. Excellent news followed by a killer blow, even though its still excellent news.

The wife has been in floods of tears over it all.

Crazy crazy day.

How much leave and RDIL's have you got left? Will they not let you use them to cover the last two weeks of notice?

As for the AL & RDIL. I've not carried much over into the new financial year. Probably about 18 hours and 1 RDIL.

Better than nowt I guess.
