Feeling big-headed

Post by speedbird591 »

As you know, a while back I did a research project on Teddy Davis, a Lancaster E/O who was my dad's cousin, and created a website with all the material that I'd unearthed.

I rarely get any contacts or feedback through the site but I received an email yesterday from somebody researching their grandfather who had found him in one of the photographs. I was unable to help him with further info but passed his details on to Dr. Vincent Holyoak. Vince has written several books including one about RAF Bottesford and was a huge help to me as he has an extensive archive of Bomber Command information.

Vince isn't just an enthusiast. He has a senior position with English Heritage and is also their go-to man for anything to do with historic crash sites. I've just received an email from him which contained some very flattering words about my website and I'm feeling quite chuffed so I hope you don't mind if I share them :worried:
I've been involved in the Dornier 17 recovery that's on the news at the moment - the HLF wanted English heritage's opinion of the project before they'd release the funding. I'm still meaning to get around to re-writing the EH crash sites guidance, to which end, various individuals and organisations have been approaching us with projects, the most recent of which was an arts project on WW2 crash sites in the Peak District. They were talking about various ways of expressing the results and mentioned the web. I sent them a link to your website, and the Peak District National Park archaeologist was only telling me the other day in a different meeting how much he admired your work. He liked the design, the accessibility, the use of original source material and the links. All in all, excellent stuff! You should be very proud of it.

Hi Ian,

That really is great feedback, and very worthy. It is a lovely site, you did a smashing job on it.

Good to see that you are appreciated, Ian. :welldone:

Hi Nev, :hello: you must have momentarily forgotten to just click on the little blue icon under the avatar. It'll always tell you if there's a valid site.
Funny, I thought it showed on everyone's posts - I've hit a few that tell me "Error", anyway, I couldn't see one for you, so it looks like I was wrong again. :$

BTW, ;) I reckon Ian pasted himself into that picture. :shhh: I can't imagine him passing that shapely walker without crashing.
Cheers, Mike.

Hi Mike,

The little blue "world" icon only shows if someone enters a valid url in the website section of their profile. If they enter something that isn't valid you'll get an error. If they leave it blank the icon doesn't show at all :)

Thanks, guys. The 'world' icon and the little link in my signature are to speedbird747.com which I suppose you'd call my 'portal' with links to some of my other sites and pages. The Lancaster website I'm referring to can be reached from there by clickng on the button 'A Statistic of War'.

Mike - you're quite right - I'd probably have crashed in a situation like that. Or maybe stopped to ask directions...

Ian :)

Tried to click on the link for FGW then I realised I was wasting my time as it is 'for Railway Professionals only'.
