KTVU news station has been the victim of a cruel prank, announcing that the pilots of the Asiana Airlanes plane that crashed in San Francisco on Saturday included ‘Captain Sum Ting Wong’ and ‘Ho Lee Fuk’.
The cheap, racist jokes might not have been funny, but KTVU’s failure to spot them certainly were.
‘KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots on board the flight’ the newsreader announced, before reading one-by-one the crack team of ‘Sum Ting Wong’, ‘Wi Tu Lo’, ‘Ho Lee Fuk’ and ‘Bang Ding Ow’.
It added that it was still trying to ascertain what roles the pilots played aboard Flight 214.
The station later apologised on-air, insisting that the names had been confirmed by a National Transportation Safety Board official.
It said in a statement: ‘Earlier in the newscast we gave some names of pilots involved in the Asiana Airlines crash. These names were not accurate despite an NTSB official in Washington confirming them late this morning. We apologise for this error.’
The Boeing 777 crashed on Saturday killing two passengers and injuring another 180. Shortly before it crashed the plane was travelling 39 miles below its 158mph target speed.

Only an idiot could read that out on a live news program
Re: In the worst possble taste warning
The airline are now suing the TV station: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23321740
However they aren't suing the NTSB who confirmed the names to the TV station. Mr. C. Lee Prat, lawyer and head of the Professional Outrage Division of the airline confirmed that they really, really didn't want to upset the NTSB during their investigations into the crash.
