Surely the whole idea of running in front of a tormented bull is to get chased.

Agreed. Those bulls can be vicious. My favorite part of a rodeo is watching a bull roughing up the rodeo dummy. I once saw a bull knock the dummy at least 20 feet into the air. At the time I was sitting way up in the cheap seats and I swear that dummy was at eye level with me. Here's a video of a bull sticking it to a dummy.
