Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

What made me admire the guy was not his DJing, or anything to do with music, but his performances in the BTCC.
Everyone said he was just there because of his fame and fortune (including me) but he soon proved us wrong. Yes, he rubbed up a lot of the 'pros' with his driving, but he was good enough to bring home some great results and to be chosen to partner some of the top names of the sport in the endurance events.

Re: Mike Smith BBC presenter has died
I had the opportunity to speak to him once during one of the Birmingham Super-Prix races. I used to be a member of a UK wide Amateur Radio emergency communications group (RAYNET) and we looked after the emergency communications for the event, primarily as support to the St. John's Ambulance Brigade who were there as medical cover for the spectators. On the day I spoke to him he'd just retired from the race with car problems on a 'back street' section of the course where there were no spectators and myself and a young St. John's nurse happened to be in that section as we traveled to our allotted patrol area. We chatted with him for a few minutes and then he asked if we had any water with us, the nurse pulled a bottle from her medical bag and handed it through the fence at which point Mike grabbed her hand and then kissed it while giving her a huge wink! The nurse went bright red and looked quite flustered but Mike just chuckled and said his thanks and goodbyes and then ran across the track to make his way back to the pits. It certainly made the nurse's day as she kept saying "Mike Smith kissed my hand" like a mantra for several minutes afterwards.
He was a great guy, with a great sense of humour and I am happy that I managed to chat to him if only for a few minutes.
RIP Mike.

I was too young to be a R1 listener, but I do remember his foray into Touring Cars, and the nice Mobil 1 livery on his Cosworth.

Never knew he existed, but seeing as he was apparently a pro, and had a sense of humour,
would he have detested, or laughed, at the lack of punctuation in this extract from the report:
His wife of 25 years, the TV presenter Sarah Greene, thanked hospital staff who had treated him for their care and compassion.

Cheers, Mike.

Ah, Sarah Greene - bit of a hottie back in the day! A lot of hearts were left disappointed when they tied the knot - but well done to them for making it work where so many in their line of work failed.

Anyone remember the year he partner Rob Gravett in the plain white RS500 and the only sponsor they could get was a little Shell logo. Great times. Rest in Peace.
Ben.
