Elite:Dangerous

Post by DogTailRed2 »

The original Elite came out in 84 and I was hooked. I've been waiting with anticipation for the release of Elite:Dangerous.
So I took the plunge, paid my £40 and loaded up the game.

Elite:Dangerous has the potential to be either a classic or a total flop.
Well after three days of play all I can say is `Brilliant!`. It's all I had hoped for and more ten fold.
However a word of caution.

If you enjoy detail. Enjoy playing a game over a long period of time. Enjoy depth. Enjoy strategy. Then this is the game for you.
If you want to dive in and blast the galaxy into submission I think you will disappointed.

You will need to play the training missions. Search the web for what the hell is going on. But, once you get there it's awesome.

From what I've seen, it is impressive. The "trailer" though - read the fine print at the bottom at the start of the video - "Not actual game footage". There's been a lot of people pushing for Frontier to take down the "launch trailer" since it isn't even rendered in the game engine and its "action" isn't representative of the real gameplay. Beside that and their decision at launch to dump the single player mode which was part of the Kickstarter promised features, they've put out one helluva game that has a lot of space to explore.

I've been playing the beta for the past couple of months and I love it. :)
Not had much time to play since the full release though, but hopefully I should get more time in the New Year.

I don't think this game needs a single player mode. Online is definitely the way to go. Fingers crossed enough players start playing.
One of the criticisms for a single player mode is that the game is too hard. Maybe I'm old school but I have found it a lot easier than the original Elite, so far.

I personally don't mind either, but the problem isn't whether or not it "needs" single player. It's that they put it on the list of promised features for the Kickstarter and is partly why they made their goal as there was a fairly large surge in backers after that was added. For them to then announce release a week before the date and at the same time say that they weren't going to include single player was a bit of a kick in the crotch for a fairly sizable contingent. Coupled with the "launch trailer" that didn't use any in game footage at all and very little in-engine rendering (compared to say Star Citizen which is 99% in engine realtime rendering and about 50% fully in game), a lot of people felt that the dev team have kinda told them to "sod off" now that it's out and don't care about the contributors and testers that they rode the backs of to that release.

Bought it just before Christmas and Love it.

On the original I only ever used the keyboard controls but on ED if found the mouse/keyboard controls quite difficult.
A joystick is much easier.

It is a bit of a grind to get some decent credits but doing a few contracts can boost your bank balance very quickly but can also bring you some unlooked for trouble.

Flying through space.......its bloody great :excited:

I am hearing great things too about the game. I spent many hours playing the original as a kid on the BBC Micro (that and Aviator of course!). I am tempted to grab this as I scored an Oculus Rift SDK kit from work and I am told it's great with that, but I am spending way too much time flying P3Dv2 with the Oculus ( a total game changer in my opinion).

I hear it's great on multiplayer too, have you tried that?

The only "problem" with open multiplayer is the idiots who like to cause trouble and wreck others enjoyment of the game. 8) There is an option for private groups though. I play in the Mobius group, where any player vs player conflict is not allowed (except in war zones with opposing factions). You can come and go between groups and open or solo play as you wish, so if you do fancy a bit of PvP action the option is there. :)
I'd love to try the Rift. Very tempted to get one when the retail version comes out.
