Me and my shadow.

Post by 511Flyer »

I recently reacquainted myself with the delightful Auster, and found this strange effect.

Apologies if this matter has been raised previously.

Those shadows look awfully dark *-)

Anywho.. I'd never seen that before either so I just tried to make it work. Initially, no outline so I slewed around and the shadow appears. Although the pilot is invisible when the engine is off and the parking brakes on.. his shadow appears depending on where the sun is. Strange but true :-O

He's probably at an airport outside of the UK....somewhere where the sun actually shines, Dave

IMHO, it sounds like the human texture file is missing. The sim produces the shadow because the object is there, but we can't see it.
Cheers, Mike.

Mike..

It's the visibility of the pilot mate. When the parking brakes are applied with the engines off.. the pilot becomes invisible (although he's still there). Why his invisible form should cast a shadow through the bottom of the model is beyond me but that's what's happening.

Dave, what I'm saying is that the human is there.
He doesn't BECOME invisible, he's just another object like the wheel chocks, which are told to appear only under set conditions.
The sim knows he's there, so it casts a shadow.
We can't see him because sim objects can be invisible when no texture is applied to them.
He might be made of black material 0,0,0, which is invisible.
If we found the object in the model, and applied a valid texture, he would appear.
It is possible that he was textured using a bmp that wasn't the correct dimensions; they look fine, but if the image is, say, 112 x 500 pixels, FSX will not read it.
If the bmp is 512 x 512, and a section 112 wide and 500 high is applied to the object, it will be fine.

It's not a shadow of the pilot in his seat, it's in the wrong place for that. It's a figure standing in front of the parked aircraft. In my FSX hangar, I have the Auster, but mine is white with red stripe, rather than the one above. My invisible man is slightly left of the fuselage, (looking from the pilot's seat), but still in front of the wing.

The pilot texture is fine. It displays correctly when the pilot is visible. It's probably a FSX bug, or the numpty who made the model messed up. ;)
