To Alice...

Post by petermcleland »

This is my leg 3 of the RTW in the C47:-

Image
At Sydney, ready to start the checks.

Image
Taxying out I have to use the yellow arrows...

Image
...That tower looks interesting...I wonder if anyone has slid down the handrail!

Image
Starting the take-off roll.

Image
Airborne and gear coming up.

Image
On course for Alice.

Image
The outskirts of Sydney stretch way out.

Image
In the climb to 8000 feet.

Image
Reached the edge of Sydney now and open country is in sight.

Image
Cruising now but...

Image
...the country is still green.

Image
There is the co-pilot...You can't see him when you are inside. I wonder if they might change that!

Image
There is a gibbous Moon up there ahead!

Image
Oops...Just popped into cloud!

Image
There is the desert coming into view ahead.

Image
Whoa! That's a shock when you get over it...Didn't realise it was quite so red!

Image
Still quite a bit...

Image
--of cloud...

Image
...about!

Image
Some hours later and there is Alice showing ahead on the GPS.

Image
We are being vectored now towards an ILS that I did not know about.

Image
We will be vectored past the airfield as the wind is behind us and we will be landing on RW 12.

Image
Now I can see why they climbed us to 5500 feet!

Image
I'm being turned now onto a Base leg to the ILS.

Image
I'm established now on the ILS for RW 12 and can see the airport ahead.

Image
Here is my view from inside and I am maintaining 85 kts.

Image
There seems a sharp line between desert and green!

Image
On short final approach...

Image
...and here we are parked and unloaded...This time I stopped short of the pumps and my remaining fuel is 187.82 galls, so I've used 616.18 galls,
which equates to 1.77 nms/gall. The distance was 1090 nms. Next stop is Darwin.

Thanks for looking...All the pics look best if clicked to Full Size :)

Brilliant pictures Peter as well as the flight. Guess you will be having some R&R before the next leg which I am looking forward to.

Regards
Nigel.

Thanks, Peter for yet more wonderful screenshots.
With regard to the 'redness' of the desert - yes, it really is that colour. Another place that I've visited with similar colouration, is Monument Valley in Arizona US. In both cases, it would be easy to convince yourself that you were on Mars!

Looking forward to further updates.

Regards

Kevin

Great screenshots Peter! If you want to do a bit of reading enroute, I guess 'A Town Like Alice' would be appropriate ;)
Due to shortages and cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off.

Very enjoyable Peter. Looking forward to the Darwin leg.

Are you flying in real time or have you speeded up the sim?

I never EVER speed up the sim...If I did then it would not really be a "Simulation" :agree:

Hi Peter, I can see both sides of this issue, you yourself said that one you were at cruise and on autopilot you left the cockpit while you "go and have tea and bun etc", I am sure those fine lads at the CAA would not be very happy if they learned you left the cockpit unattended for an extended period.

Personally I would never tell anyone how to fly and find your tour very enjoyable so far.
