We were chatting in the pub last week, and the tragedy of HMS Thetis came up. This led to something else - I'm sure I can remember an accident with an RN submarine which sank while alongside in port back in the 1970s or 1980s. There was only a handful of men aboard at the time, and I'm sure I remember seeing film of them coming to the surface having used the escape tube ( or whatever it's called in official parlance ). Am I imagining this, because nobody else could remember it, and we are all of the same vintage.
Any thoughts, chaps ?

HMS Artemis? Googled “submarine sank alongside”.

Re: Trying to recall a submarine accident.
Cheers Paul, that's the one. I tried Googling as well, but it looks like you chose the right combination of words. Thanks again, I shall read up on it.
Re: Trying to recall a submarine accident.
There was also the loss of the H.M.S. Affray in the early 1950s

Hi Paul.
Maybe this will help.
It's a pdf of subs that were lost and their crew.

Re: Trying to recall a submarine accident.
Thanks for the responses chaps, but it was HMS Artemis as Paulsl informed me in the second post. It's odd that nobody I was with in the pub could recall it, because the crew members coming to the surface was on the national TV news that night, and the papers the next day.
Re: Trying to recall a submarine accident.
Here's a few pics. It's the newsreel of the man coming to the surface that I remember most. Only three men were trapped inside, and after 12 hours they all escaped from the forward torpedo room.
Sunk alongside HMS Ocelot, just the tip of the conning tower still showing:
One of the crew coming to the surface:
Artemis being raised only to be scrapped:
