RAF Runway Signage

Post by TSR2 »

Hi Chaps,

This is probably a silly question, but I seem to recall (inn the 80's a possibly earlier) the RAF had different signage for runways / taxiways as opposed to the civil standard yellow / black with red for the runways.

Am I imagining it, or can someone tell be what it was? I have red backgrounds in my head, but I may be getting confused with the civil runway signage.

Thanks.

Ben,
Not being knowledgable, I searched here, there, and hopefully everywhere, but found nothing** on this.

I will continue looking, but didn't want your question to drift into history.
Apart from Peter McLelland, and Tonks, I'm pressed to think of Member pilots who used military runways.
Many would have seen them, but flying off and on them would focus their attention.
Maybe you could contact Tonks; I'm guessing you have access to alternative addresses, and his use of them would be more recent.

**EDIT:By "nothing", I mean nothing to differentiate military from civil signage.

Hi Mike, I’m beginning to doubt myself. I think these days they’re broadly the same, other than the distance markers.

I need to go back through all my old photos.

Hi Ben, forty years ago since I last drove around the peri tracks at RAF Scampton and my memory has faded regarding those days I used to drive regularly on the airfield but hopefully this link will be able to help.

Don't think there were any at all, just length to go boards on the runway itself.

Hi Nev, yep, the black boards with the numbers on. Maybe it was just red signage with “active runway ahead”

It’s just bugging me.

One from RAF Wittering although from the air it still gives you a pretty good idea of the actual layout from taxi way to runway at the start of the video.

Late Edit: For your additional information Ben, at each entry point from the taxi-way onto the runway there were traffic lights, red or green depending on whether an aircraft was on approach or ready for take-off this was purely for ground vehicles and heaven help the driver who ignored the red light!!

When I was in the RAF I never actually read the Stating Orders where I was stationed.

Thanks chaps.

Nigel, it’s not the markings I’m after, but the signage. I just made out a red runway number board in Nev’s video, which is was what I was thinking. 👍😊
