Very Lucky Escape!!
I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.
Re: Very Lucky Escape!!
A frightening experience, particularly as it did not seem possible to extinguish the fire. What is extraordinary is that this was one of two Pratt and Whitney uncontained failures on the same day, the other being on a Boeing 747 in Holland just after takeoff
Re: Very Lucky Escape!!
I thought that from looking at the fire, it looked to be oil of some sort rather than fuel that was burning at that point? I'm no expert, but I'd not have expected fuel to burn like that in that area. Possibly oil from a failed gearbox?

According to the Beeb Boeing have recommended grounding all 777s fitted with those engines

Re: Very Lucky Escape!!
The thrust reverser cascades are made from a composite material, and combined with some leftover fuel or oil it was probably this that kept burning.
Due to shortages and cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off.
