Quite a lot of light and ultralight aircraft of the 1950s/60s had no gyro instruments and thus were strictly VMC only machines. If you had turn and slip, you could in an emergency deal with IMC on a limited panel basis ( the IR and later the IMC rating tests included a mandatory limited panel section including recovery from unusual attitudes ) but this was very testing ( no pun implied) and not something you would ever have wanted to carry out in real life if it were at all turbulent . One aircraft I ran a group on, the Tipsy Nipper , had merely ASI, compass, altimeter, and ball in the middle and you NEVER went near IMC with that although it was wonderful fun to fly in good VMC
