The Navy Lark was a must listen to program. It was one of the comedy programs broadcast by British Forces Broadcasting Service in Germany along with Beyond Our Ken and Round The Horn and The Goon Show back in the 60's.

Life was so much less complicated then.

R.I.P. Leslie and thank you for brightening up my life.

Allan, I don't know whether you're aware, but all those programs regularly come up on BBC Radio 4 Extra's schedule, especially The Goon Show and Round The Horn. They rerun things going right back to the days of BBC Light Programme.

I think the last thing I saw Leslie Phillips in was Steven Spielberg's 'Empire of the Sun', advising Jim's father to get the family out of Shanghai to somewhere safe, like Singapore. A very small part, but well acted nevertheless.

Thanks Paul,

I tend to use Radio 4 Extra on Freeview (708) That way I can record and play back at leisure. Takes me back to the days when a group of nineteen-year-olds would sit round a radio in a barrack block in Germany and be in hysterics.

Those were the days, no TV, video, YouTube and instant contact. Did I mention no money?

Thanks again.

Well, we are getting back to the days of no money - and we haven't even had the budget yet.

The Navy Lark was a regular listen on Sundays back in the days before I ended up married to Ramona Povey.

I once saw Leslie Phillips coming out of the back door of a theatre in London and throwing a bag into the back of his MGB (what else would he have driven). He was quite happy to swap greetings with a bunch of passers-by.

Cheers and "left hand down a bit" Sub Lt Phillips.

Yes, Another sad loss.
The longer you and I are around, the more of these little bits of our fond memories will be chipped away.
I am glad that he at least got to 98.
Thanks for the laughs Leslie.
