Hi,
I'm having a problem with a very hot CPU whilst running Prepar3d v5, ORBX sceneries and Carenado regional turboprops under Win11. TBH I get the problem even with the Cessna copied over from FSX. I have monitored the temperatures and once in the air it can hit the high 90Cs. The other day it hit 105C and promptly shut down the whole PC, probably just as well. The graphics card doesn't seem to get very hot even under load.
I have today taken the CPU fan off, cleaned it and the CPU heatsink and applied new thermal paste and reinstalled the fan. The temperatures are now in the high 80s and even jumping into the 90s occasionally and there hasn't been a shutdown ... yet. The case is cleaned and dustfree, the CPU is on new thermal paste and the fan seems to be working correctly. Any ideas?
Andy

Re: Hot CPU running Prepar3d v5
Hi Andy,
I'd have thought in the 80's should be pretty normal for a cpu tbh.
Is the CPU over clocked? Also, which CPU is it?

Re: Hot CPU running Prepar3d v5
Hi Ben,
Thanks for the reply. I'm never sure what running temperatures can be expected with flightsims, the 80s probably are normal. That it got up over 100C is what bothers me and the fact that the whole system shut down obviously bothered the PC too.
The CPU is the one in my spec list/signature, the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and it is not overclocked. It's 5 years old but has given sterling service up until now.

Re: Hot CPU running Prepar3d v5
I’m not sure what temps the AMDs should run, but over 100 is likely too hot. You’ve done the right thing though, cleaning and new thermal paste should sort it.
Ben.

Re: Hot CPU running Prepar3d v5
You did not tell us weather conditions and temperature conditions in your apartment or house. Also, do you give plenty of air space behind the computer?
A computer or laptop usually have lifetime of about 3 years if being used EVERY DAY and EVERY NIGHT even though I have plenty of laptops running well way way way over 3 years old without any problems.
It depends on temperature conditions of your apartment or your home. Have those conditions changed?
My laptops usually run hot during summers but run fine during winters
Regards,
Aharon

Re: Hot CPU running Prepar3d v5
Hi Aharon,
You might have noticed from my location that I live on a Scottish island, Stornoway (EGPO) being my local airport. Temperatures summer amd winter are often very similar and it's a cold place most of the time. I keep my house at around 20C all year round (at great expense I might add) so I don't believe temperatures inside cause an issue. The PC has space all around it and only Prepar3d gives problems.
I have just ordered a double water cooled fan system to keep top temperatures under control so I wait to see what the effect will be on the sim once it is installed.

Re: Hot CPU running Prepar3d v5
Wow it must be interesting life in area of Stornoway!!! Yeah you are right about cold weather during summers. I went to Scotland twice during July vacations and I had to buy sweater there to keep me warm!!
Thanks for ruling out the room temperature
Good luck and I hope it works out for you!
Once again, thanks for your cool answers
