Hi Dave

They all walked away from the Stansted one as well

As far as the Milan one.................I think from what I remember it decended into high but quite flat ground the tail booms failed and it was a bit of a bump.

I suppose sitting high up on a bed of cargo kept them up above the main disintergration.

a rather more exausting climb than is usual was required to get over the Alps which included flying south first in order to gain altitude.

Reminds me of my time on the Russian Front.

In 1983 I spent a week in Kabul inspecting & testing a DC10 that BCAL was buying. It was interesting watching the Russian Military cargo planes taking off and circling while they gained enough altitude to clear the mountains. Every 15 secs they fired off a series of flares to divert IR missiles.

The DC10 had previously been hit by a missile up the back of #1 Eng but the warhead hadn't gone off, so it just shatterd the turbine, pock marking the underside of the wing with sharpnel.
