The oft-mentioned Barrie Hygate book on British Experimental Jet Aircraft has a good section on the AW-52 (along with some veeeerrry tempting plans!). Despite all of their efforts they never managed to achieve laminar flow on more than 4% of the wing; as Kevin said, dust, insects etc were impossible to avoid.
