Thanks to everyone for your replies, now I have an idea as to how things were done back then.
Any hints as to were I might find info on the airways system that may have been in place on the continent at that time? I was fortunate enough to win a bid on e-bay for a bundle of WACs for the Middle East circa '48-50 and some of the info on them is what started this research. Probably the first thing I noticed was no airways anywhere :think: which led me into my navigation research. The charts have plenty of radio beacons, a few HF DF stations, and even a 4 course range at Cairo, but no routes linking anything to anywhere.
So if I understand correctly, outside of organized airspace you basically routed yourself direct and took appropriate fixes using what was available to check your track.
If any of you are interested in flying the US airways system circa '40's to mid '50's you should try rr40.zip available at the regular sites. The file offers a complete recreation of the old 4 course range system for the US, Canada, and a couple other locations.
