Yes, the C-124s were quite something. There was a write-up put up on Flightsim.com by an ex-Coast Guard Cutter crewman a few days ago about Ocean Station Victor and how the C-124s were loved by the ocean station ship crews because they would be in radio range for several hours, allowing for most, if not all, of the messages waiting to be passed on so that loved-ones stateside could hear from the crewmen during the long 3-6 month voyages. I guess that would have been one of the better perks of being out there is that you could send messages home via different aircraft that flew overhead so your loved ones might get messages on stationary from several dozen different airlines or a phone call from one of the crew members of a flight to pass on a message (it did happen. My great uncle sent a message back to his wife while serving during Korea and she got a phone call from the JAL captain who took the message later that day).

Pete P - do you remember the days when you could actually get crossings of Green 1 off airways - we used regularly to cross it North/South somewhere near Cheltenham at about FL 190 en route to Jersey or Nantes - those were the days! IIRC correctly it was VMC only - in IMC we had to use Amber 25, which incidentally I was never so keen on because we occasionally passed gliders at upwards of FL 130 coming from Long Mynd in wave conditions
