A very good job. The detailing and the colours are very, very well done. Maybe a chance for a weathered version?
I downloaded great sounds of the Olympus engines from the "Projet Mach 2" site. Just miss the smell of the leather, but for the rest it's perfect.
About your problem Pete, it may be that your ATI video card (I had the same with mine) can't take the format of the dynamic shine? Maybe setting the textures into DXT format (if you know about that - otherwise I'll explain with a 'pm') will help?
My video card is an Nvidia and the transparency problem only seems to occur with this aircraft. Changing the textures from 32-bit to DXT3 works but 32-bit on other aircraft are OK. Very strange
Anyway, my system seems to work better with DXT3 with IMHO little or no reduction in clarity so most textures get changed. Just hadn't got round to it in this instance in the rush to see how good the repaint is, and it is good!
Nice to hear it's sorted, Pete. Did you also remove the mips when you converted the textures to DXT3? I hate the blurriness from MIPS :curse:
Usually the first thing I do with new textures is check there are no MIPS. I think it has to do with my NVidia card. Or is it just me?
As it happens I didn't remove the mips on the Vulcan and the textures are pin sharp. I've only had the Nvidia card for a week and I am still playing around with the settings so not completely sure how it handles mips. My old ATI card gave sharp or blurred depending on the plane. Never could figure why!
I've run some tests with the Vulcan with and without mips and on the whole I have to say it looks better WITH the mips. For instance, without the mips the reg number on the tail flickers, WITH mips it looks great. It's the same with the game mips slider set in the middle and at max.
Resolution is 1280x1024 which is the highest my screen will take.
I suppose in a case like this it comes down to personal perception; if it looks right it is right, at least for for you!
I only just read the 'transparent model' thread so apologies for not responding before. It seems like the matter is in hand what with Sknepper and Gary's comments so I will leave well alone there, suffice to say I was sorry to hear you had experienced problems.
Regarding weathered textures and so on, by now you will see that I only released the latter and not the clean version, but the weathering was marginal and I felt it better with it. I have also released the early-era 360 when serving on 617 sqn with blue steel, now up at the Pond. No doubt Pete will have to make his texture conversions, as will anyone else who prefers DXT3 over extended 32 bit.
It's no big problem to convert the textures to DXT3. As nobody else has reported a problem it's seems it's something to do with my system not liking 32-bit on this model. I've long since come to the conclusion that where computers are concerned it doesn't do to "reason why" for too long, just find a workaround!
Keep up the good work, that Vulcan repaint is fantastic as are those T4 Canberras on another thread.
I tried my hardware with mips textures and fiddled with the mips setting in flightsim and indeed there was an improvement. A leopard can change it's spots Thanks for the tips Garry and Pete.
I think that it is difficult to write a textbook on which formats are best as there are many factors which differ from person to person, such as hardware and personnal taste, and the properties of the models and so on. But thank goodness we can help each other with our experiences.
