Sorry - two New Year stories for you...

On December 31st 1981, I arrived in Singapore as a member of a BA 747 crew for a 48 hour slip (layover). Another couple of crews were already in residence and had organised a wild party in some poor junior crew member's room to see in 1982. There were dozens of bottles of Veuve Cliquot (a BA stewardess wouldn't drink anything else - except perhaps Bollinger) several vintage bottles of Chateau Talbot and even some Johnny Walker Blue Label. Smoked salmon, sevruga caviar with all the garnishes, in fact a good proportion of the First Class catering from four inbound 747s. Decorations, fancy dress, the lot. Having to be in Singapore didn't mean we were going to miss our New Year party.

The problem was that we were going to celebrate midnight 7 1/2 hours earlier than our loved ones in the UK and the more family-oriented people intended to stay up until 0730 to phone home and drink champagne with their family. But an even bigger problem was that at midnight on December 31st 1981, Singapore was changing it's time zone to UTC +8. At the countdown to midnight someone turned on the telly and we all drunkenly counted the seconds down to midnight in time to a televised clock. As we got to FIVE, the minute hand on the clock fast-forwarded to 12.30 and then faded out. What an anti-climax! I was so traumatised that I've been unable to go to a New Year party since!

On December 31st 1999, I was the CSD on a 747-400 flight to Tokyo. You may remember that there were very few flights on that night due to fear of the Millenium Bug. We carried 14 passengers and 20 crew, a mixture of Japanese and British. Obviously the Japanese wanted to celebrate New Year, Japanese time which was about two hours after take off. So we all went round congratulating and kissing each other and pouring glasses of champagne. Then the First Officer worked out what time we would cross into a time zone where the new millenium was current, which was a few hours later over Khabarovsk. Everybody woke up and did it all again, but it was mainly out of relief that the engines and FMC hadn't died. When the crew woke me up from my first class slumber a couple of hours later to tell me it was about to be the millenium in the UK, I declined the invitation to join in

To be honest, one millenium in a lifetime is quite enough. Three milleniums in one night excuses me from celebrating any more! I don't think there were any other aircraft flying that route on that night so I may be one of the very few people in history to have experienced three milleniums

I'll never forget new years eve in the first gulf war in me old days in the RAF.....

Midnight came and those chaps from over the pond let loose with all their unexpended ammunition....

I am not ashamed to say i pooed meself (can i say that..... )

Now when fireworks go off at midnight on new years eve i settle myself on the comfort of my own toilet with a nice book and try to relax..... :roll: :roll: :roll:
