I'm 23 and I was far more interested in girls and rugby at school. Hence not getting required grades. Aptitude is there by far, i worked my way up in cadets to CWO and did all I could.

I would join the AAC as a ground crew soldier but train with the others and then get streamed. I'm sure the AFCO didn't say it all though.

I appreciate the advice and will welcome any more

How many GCSE's do you have? You could join as a techy, PTI or any other sort of ground trade and gain the qualifications you require during and after training.

As for anymore advice, DON'T JOIN THE AAC!

Robin, as Pringle said you can join the RAF in any trade and once posted to a station then get in touch with the education officer and he/she will be able to advise you. The RAF is very good at this as they do encourage further education.

One friend of mine in our gliding club needed a few more GCSE's. Once he had passed the required exams he applied for a commission and pilot training.......he made it.

It can be done but it will require a lot of hard work and no distractions otherwise you will not succeed!!

He changed over because the guys in the AAC do one tour flying and then the rest of their career behind a desk.

That's the officers, the NCO aircrew stay in flying jobs. Still seems a waste of flying training, apparently it's so they have an equal chance of making Top Brown Job. They actually shortened the EFT and Basic Rotary courses for the AAC compared to the RN and RAF versions as it was taking too long so they were a job or two behind their peers.

That's all it seems to be about for some Army officers though. Impressing your boss and getting up the ladder.

Oh, now you have gone and done it!

When I was younger, I wanted to be an ALM on hercs. I know you don't really get to pick then or now.

Truth be told, I joined the RAF when I was 17 and had numerous problems in Basic, problems with my health which no doctor had picked up before and also an incident (not invloving me!) which messed a few of us up. Hence a bit of reluctance to join again.

I thought the AAC as I get to play with marshalling choppers and get a chance to learn and hopefully move up a bit.
