Good point, I kind of assumed everyone was on Acceleration to use the cats, but of course if you're just going rotary it should work in any version.

Many thanks for your comments thus far.

I'm also running Acceleration.

On a related note, I found once I land on Ark she seems to shunt back and forth, causing the aircraft to do the same. This used to happen to me with the default ships in FSX and FSX+SP1, but was solved with FSX+Acceleration.

Here is a shot showing 10.6 FPS when circling Ark. Note there is nothing else in sight.

Image

Here is a shot on deck with 1.5 FPS (which I've never seen before in any version of FS!). Note although this shot is of the island I get the same FPS when looking towards the bow (although with FlyCo above, I think).

I'm running XP+SP2, with FSX+Acceleration on a 2nd HD, which is kept in good shape using Ultimate Defrag. I close all applications before running FSX. Here are the rest of the specs:

Pentium 4 3.2GHz
3Gb RAM
nVidia GeForce 7950 GT

OK, I admit the processor and GPU are aging... but the point is by managing things carefully (defragging, little autogen, few clouds, little traffic, low visibility etc.) I regularly get pretty good FPS (high 20s when locked at 30 FPS and frequently above if not). There seems to be something about the Ark that changes this.

HTH?

Hmmmm... very odd, I think your graphics card is actually better than mine, I'm only running a 7600GT although I've got 4GB of system ram. I think you've got more detailed water textures than me but that shouldn't really cause the problem as you've got less water showing in the low FPS view!!
It does seem odd that you've got such a massive drop off in FPS compared to anyone else (who's expressed a preference). I'll have to think about this a bit!

Only thing i can think of is what format the textures on Ark? The newer formats might be quicker loading.

Also, what A?C are you in there mate? Can you give us comparison shots on the default FSX carrier?

Cheers

Textures are dxt3 bmp, mainly because I couldn't face converting them all! I think they'll work if you convert them to dxt5 dds format.

I've tried the Ark with both the default F-18 (shown above) and Bell 206, with very similar frame rates.

If I can find time later I'll take some comparison shots on the default Nimitz class for you to see...

I gave the ark a go both on the gib route and also added it to my AI Carriers with it on its own and in a fleet... Traps well with both the IRIS Phantom and DSB Bucc! Catapults well too! But i did see a slight FPS dip and also the textures reload each time the ark comes in to view.

Here are some more shots of the Ark (all in default F-18).

On approach I get about 10 FPS:

Here I am having just trapped. I'm looking towards the bow, not the island. I tweaked FSX a little more and managed to get one more frame, but still only 2.5 FPS!

Image

By comparison, when circling a default Nimitz I get about 26-27 FPS:

Image

On approach I get about 21 FPS:

On the deck I get FPS in the mid-high 20s no matter where I look:

It seems like I get about 10 FPS less with the Ark than the default Nimitz (which I'm happy to live with), until I land on deck, where is plumits further. Any further ideas??
