Well...you
should brag, Brian.
That's an enviable list of aviation experiences. Almost forgot about the Connie: surely one of the most elegant aircraft ever built. I envy you even more now!
Take care...

FWIW - None of the Dan Air Comets had INS - and they all went to the grave without them - The first INS I saw was on IAS's DC8s they had Litton 51s and later 71s in 1973/74 - I believe that Tradewinds CL44s were also fitted with Litton 51s but someone else can confirm or deny that
Mark - as to jumpseats - I'll see Brians hand and add - BAC1-11, HS748, Comet 4 Britannia 100/300 series CL44 Boeing 707/717/727/737/747(100/200/SP)757/767, Douglas 3/4/6/7/8/9/10 MD80 MD11 C130 CV440/580/600 Martin 404 VC9 F28 and in the last seven days - 5.5 hours LAS-HNL B767
.75 B717 HNL-OGG and 5.2 OGG-LAS B757-200 (this afternoon 03/12) And yes my job does have perks - 70% of the time jumpseating you get a seat in the back (If your a good boy and smile a lot in the comfy seats) but now and then its an escape to go and fly on the flightdeck for a few hours - the flight from Lost Wages to Honolulu was very quiet (it was a redeye) although the view of the islands in the dawn was inspiring - Coming home today was long boring and bumpy
(757s dont ride well half empty)
cheers
Leif

Thanks for the info, Leif. I guess it makes sense that Dan-Air Comets wouldn't have had INS, since (presumably

) the majority of their routes were overland continental European and within range of ground-based radio aids (please correct me if I'm wrong!)
I'm guessing transoceanic birds like BOAC's Comets used combinations of sextants, dead reckoning, and pilotage to make hops across the pond?
BTW, Leif...do your feet ever touch the ground???

And to think the only thing I get to ride in at my day job is my desk and my 5 x 10 cubicle.... :-(

Mark
Dan Airs Comet fleet came from around the world - so if any would have had INS fitted it would have been them. And most of the time these days I spend
sitting in a Ops Office far from the nearest airport without ever seeing our aircraft except on tracker. But like Brian my job and license do have some perks
In these post 911 days it is becoming harder and harder to gain access to the flight deck so I suppose I should be thankful

You might be surprised at how much the novelty can wear off..... I've done somewhere in the region of 2,000 jump-seat trips, mainly on the DC-10, B727 & A300 (but also a variety of others inc the B707 / B747 / B757 / DC-3 / DC-6 / DC-8 / B1900 / CV-580 / Electra / Herald / F-28 / Mi-8 / C-130 / An-12 / IL-76). I spent most of yesterday on the jump-seat of a 727 flying Bahrain - Kandahar - Karachi - Bahrain. I'd much rather have had my feet up in front of the TV or been on a comfortable seat in a 5 x 10 cubicle!
One of the B757 trips was quite funny in hindsight though. Having been driving for most of the day & having a longer flight ahead I was planning on sitting in the back & as soon as we were airborne laying out my sleeping-bag and having a snooze. The skipper was a very jolly / friendly chap though and was almost insistant that I occupy the jump-seat. Half way across the North-Sea I woke up, slumped forward in the straps. I spent the rest of the flight desperately hoping that I hadn't been dribbling over the radio panels
Cheers
Richard

Numb bum Richard??
Actually have to admit the 767 Jumpseat ranks up there with the L1011 (aft position only)

For comfort or discomfort? Never jump-seated in either but the Tristar one looks as though it wouldn't be horribly bad.
I flew from Erbil to Baghdad on an An-12, 9L-LEC one day. It was the one used in the film 'Lord of War'. The crew had removed the seats in the area immediately behind the flight-deck and replaced them with seats from the first-class lounge at Baghdad. Made for a most comfortable flight

Hawaiians 767s have a single jumpseat back on the raised deck in the flight deck its a really nice seat has all the bells and whistles that the pilots seat do - Deltas 1011s had a gorgeous seat back to the left of the engineer with a headrest and tray table and all - the best jumpseat I believe was the Brit - when not carrying a nav you had that huge leather sofa back there that you could lay down on plus a huge chart table for making tea etc etc
OOps sorry OFFTOPIC
I'll get my coat
