Exactly Gary. The visual element of the sim is the biggest part of it (for me) and although good for a bunch of enthusiasts, its not sailing my boat at all, let alone flying my plane!

I have to say I'm really impressed with it - it looks wonderful, the new VC's on the Cirrus Jet and Piaggio Avanti are very slick (the c172 is good too) and if you look in the texture folders they are works of art outside too...
How do you make them look pretty on the outside in sim?
1) Options - Display - Turn texture compression off
2) Turn it back on
If you have duel core or more it separates the work load of scenery.

Cheers hinch, I'll give it a go!

Hinch, I don't have an "Options - Display" menu.
Explicitly for the dumb ass please

Thanks for that Skip. Do you know if version 8.* modles will only work on the 8.* engine, or is it backward compatible?
There is a degree of backwards compatibility, I remember once opening an old model in the PlaneMaker utility and then re-saving it in the latest format to get it in game.
I also remember trying the latest demo a few months back and spending about half an hour getting the graphics settings sorted before it looked half decent.

I downloaded the demo installer, but when I run it, it only ever displays a tangle of colours.
Tried a few times. Anyone know what the problem may be?
I've got the latest Nvidia drivers. Regular ones, not been messed with.
Works fine for me DM and I just installed it from the zip window by clicking on that first of the two files in there. I downloaded via 4 streams and I ran it after it had finished installing in about 40 minutes...I'm using the 169.21 Nvidia drivers, which I think were the latest WHQL ones when I downloaded them.
To get at the menus, click near the top of the picture...Took me ages to find that and calibrate my stick!

Ben, click near the top of the picture for the menu...the item on the extreme left ("About" I think) gives some basic instructions.

Thanks Peter.
I had just managed to sort it before coming on here again. It was a driver issue.
I do remember now that I'd downloaded 169.28, which is a beta.
So I got 169.21 instead, all was then ok & X-Plane demo is currently downloading.
I guess 169.28 has a bug in Open-GL ?
Otherwise it has been working great.

Hi Peter, thanks for posting. The best aircraft I can find (in terms of textures) is the Viggen which is quit nice. Have the res and display options sorted now, but still feel the models are very basic.
