Dave,
Even from this distance I can echo HC's sentiments -- My memories of Old Warden will always be of soft summer evenings and the smells
of 80 octane petrol , mown grass , and castor oil.

I was thinking - I dont think I paid admission back in those glory days - more often than not I flew in there from Luton - I would love to visit
again - there are many memories there of my youth.

Charlie - heading our way? ;-)

£10.. a bargain! ;-)

You may be right about it being a tad closer HC. The route I go takes me up the A1 then I turn right onto the Baldock Bypass. I've see the signpost for Old Warden a few times before when transitting said A1 up to Newark. It was the 'Day Out' experience.. bird sanctuary.. KID'S that has put me off up to now. I might just break with tradition ;-)

When is their next show or is that it for this year??

Old Warden's like a good restaurant - you know exactly what you're going to get, but with a few surprises every so often, some of them that you couldn't see anywhere else (like the Sea Hurricane, Seafire, Sea Fury and Sea Hawk 4 ship in 2006). :)

Well Mate.. if the weather holds, I think you've just made my decision for me (Leif too.. tks for the input) :) I'm sure I'll feel a little guilty passing the Duxford turnoff after over 10years of 3/4 shows per year plus incidental visits in between but hey.. I've always wanted to go to Old Warden and this seems a good opportunity. :)

That's the only caveat I would add - if it rains all next week in Bedfordshire, then the home based heavies (Hurricane, Provost) may struggle, as have several of the shows this summer (the September show was the lowest attendance I've ever seen there in 20 odd years of going).

Charlie

Do you know many of the older worthies there?

who would have been around in the 60s and 70s?

ask if anyone remembers a bunch of lunatics launching a handglider behind a car in the late 60s -- flown by a

crazy Irishman from Britannia Airways ;) - Im showing my age - But I remember when the Sea Hurricane and Spitfire

sat outside looking a bit sad and weather worn - and the Comet was still a static display --- sorry i'll get my zimmer frame

Dave -- As HC says its a place that can be totally magical or a bust depending on weather .

My father has many slides from the 70s. I started going in 1982 I think, not that I remember, I was a little young!

That probably would have been the lost Shuttleworth Spitfire, the PR.XI (PL983, sold by the collection during a 1983 cash crisis, that crashed fatally in 2001)?

£100 donation will get you a 10 minute taxy in the Comet. :) Maybe it'll fly next year for its 75th. :)

It would indeed have been PL983 - I remember being fascinated by the side camera windows on it
lets see when I left to come to the States (part1) the LVG was being put together and they were talking about
rebuilding the Comet --- 100 to sit and taxiing in a 75 year old aircraft -- cheap at twice the price :)
