British Airways was the airline formed by the merger of BEA and BOAC

Hello James, thanks for your interest. BOAC stood for British Overseas Airways Corporation and BEA stood for British European Airways. They were both owned by the Government and one flew European routes and the other Overseas. The government decided to merge them in 1974 and the two words in their names that were common were British and Airways so that's what they called the new company! But there was also a company in the 1930s that was called British Airways so that made an even older historic link.

I used to work for BOAC - I joined as a steward in 1972 and that's why I often talk about the company and do screenshots of the aircraft I used to work in.

I don't know if it was official but at the time of the merger it was said it was spelt with a small 'a'.......British airways to distinguish it from the earlier British Airways which was merged with Imperial Airways to form BOAC in I think it was 1940..or there abouts.

I think you're right, Garry. The lower case 'a' looked a bit odd but made sense in that respect.
