My intent with this post is not to start a Mac Vs. Windows argument - I just think these are funny.

I still reckon the best OS was 3.1 with TabWorks

You missed a number off Jonesey.. 1. Windows 3.11 was THE operating system mate. The WindowsNT of it's day Worked just fine on my pc and could see up to 24mb of system ram.. hang on.. was that 16mb :o .. can't remember :think:

I think every version of Windows has been a bit shaky at launch and there has always been a case for waiting for the first service pack. Vista has now been around for two years and research firm Gartner predicts that at the end of this year it will have 28% of the OS market compared to just 22% for XP after the same release time. So it seems that take up has been better than with XP.

So people were hanging on to Win 98, Me and 2000 in resistance of XP! I know I've said it before, but it seems that two main problems have given Vista a bad name. Insufficient drivers at launch for older hardware and some older software incompatibility (OK that's two probs but I've counted it as one ) and poor performance when upgrading from XP. It only seems to work properly when bought ready installed on a new PC.

I have three laptops which came with Vista Home premium and the only single problem I've had is with the Canon camera software. Everything else has worked perfectly and I love it.

But Windows 7? Not bl**dy likely! - I'm waiting for Google to expand Chrome into an OS

Its never advisable to upgrade from XP to Vista, its a screwey process which leaves XP drivers in place and screws up most of the time. Always has been advised to reinstall Vista over as a full product, or you just wait to get a new PC and start from scratch.

Dave, that win 3.11 was sooooo good!!! With a 25cpu and 8Mb RAM it ran well and whats' more you could do a lot more in Windows itself than you can with the present OS we have!!

I go with Chris, although never having upgraded from one OS to another, I have heard that it is far better to do a full clean install rather than upgrade as traces are bound to be left from the old version on the hard drive.

Such as? I've certainly never experienced that.

I think one of the problems Vista had was that its development cycle was longer than planned which allowed XP to get more entrenched. Similar to FS9 in some ways.

From the reports so far on Win 7 it appears MS are trying to cut back to a core OS rather than trying to cram everything in which seems to be the case with Vista*. One of their aims is to have it running on the new generation of Netbooks which have so far extended the life of XP as it's the only OS MS have that can run on their limited specs.

*I've only used Vista on my sisters laptop when she wanted it setting up, the rest of my impression is formed from reading theregister.co.uk so I'm willing to be corrected.
