The web's superb, but sometimes not so much. Plenty examples of ludicrous speculation being taken as fact for example, 'Dave B vanishes, last seen pushing Shergar into a Bristol freighter while taking a call from Lord Lucan, and Elvis was the loadmaster'.....
The thing is, before the web only the Independent's readers would have seen that story, plus, while there's no reason to doubt that the quotes are legitimate, the statements comparing Fossett's A/C to some sort of flying Titanic are daft, and humans *need* to explain things - if there's no 'answer' it becomes the next plausible explanation. It's a bit like looking at clouds or some random pattern and seeing a face in it - the brain computes it into something comprehensible.

a bit Like this
man goes into a shop and asks the clerk
MAn: "Are you Lord Lucan:?
Clerk: "Why are you with the GC"?
MAn: "The What?
Clerk "
THe GC ..
Gaming Commission"
MAn: WHy?
Clerk: "You look like one"
Man: " I Do"?
Clerk "No, thats just it, you don't"
borrowed that, changed it a tad

....
( but like he's the first one who thought of that...... )
