I read somewhere that the Nimrod would have been Trident based had it not been for a few uncompleted Comet airframes knocking about at either Hatfield or Chester/Broughton and a need to find work for HSA staff at the former Avro sites in Manchester. Likewise there were proposed military versions of the 1-11 and 146, the latter getting as far as a flying mockup (G-BSTA, a camo-painted 146-100QT with a wooden pole pretending to be a refuelling probe!)

Yes, I've seen the pictures of that 146. I've seen reference to marine patrol, air ambulance and other military proposals for the 1-11. I must try and dig them out.
